May 21 update: Lou Lou has now been with us for a week, and we have been having small victories. This tiny little peanut was terrified when she first arrived, but she is coming out of her shell and showing that FBD moxie a bit more every day!
Although she is terrified of people, she does really well with the other animals. She gets along fine with the cat, and in the last few days she has started playing with toys. She is a bit destructive, and she tore through one to get at the squeaker- so you need to keep an eye on her!
We have still been having trouble getting her to eat, but she is not exactly skinny, so we just feed her regularly and are glad when she eats a substantial amount. Her incision has healed fine, and the after effects of her prolapse seem to have cleared up as well.
Having been a mill dog, she has no concept of housebreaking, but we have been bringing her out to the yard regularly and there have only been a few 'accidents'. She doesn't pee or poop in her crate, so we have been putting her in there at night to prevent accidents. We have not walked her on a leash yet, because she just has no concept, but we will continue to work with her to get her acclimated to a 'normal' dog life. She has figured out how to get up and down our two back steps, but she is still afraid of the big steps that go to the second floor. I am sure that she will master those in time- she just has such short little legs that it is a bit daunting for her!
LouLou has been coming into the living room and hanging out with us and the other dogs and cat in the evenings, so she is definitely calming down, and she let me hand feed her some treats the other day. I also think she is learning her new name - every time I see her I say "Hi Lou Lou" and today she actually responded! She also lets me pet her a bit now without shaking and when I pick her up she doesn't struggle to get away. As I said, these are small victories, but added together, I feel that she has made a lot of progress in just one week.
Intake info: Please meet Lou Lou! She came to us from a shelter where she was a breeder release. When she came in she had a prolapsed uterus which needed immediate correction. She was also spayed. Lou Lou is now in her foster home & we will post updates as we know more about her.
