My Ideal home would be: one with kids (8+ please b/c I came from a shelter and young kids may be a bit too much for me), friendly dogs and an active family. I am an active guy and I love to be busy; someone who takes me for a walk everyday is a must! Someone who is home a lot or able to come let me out would be a big bonus - I need lots of patience on my house training as I've never been in a home before! I am still working on the idea of going potty outside.
Intake info: Tater Tot comes to us from a shelter. He is likely the product of a puppy mill. We are unsure of his age. He is a sweet little guy who has had little vet care up until now. He was neutered, teeth extracted and nares widened (8-19-15). He is recovering and will then move to his foster home where we can get a better feel for him
August 27: Tater Tot is such a sweet little boy. He loves to be around everyone in the family. He bunny hops around the house and is just a happy fella. When he first meets you, he is a bit timid. He is great with the kids, cat and resident dog. He walks beautifully on a leash and loves to take walks. After he's had his fun playing, he loves to curl up in a comfy pet bed and take a snooze.
September 4: Tater is still doing great! He is wonderful with our kids, the resident dog and cat.
He sleeps in his crate at this time and he is crated when we are not home. He lets us know when he has to go out by stirring in his crate but he is not noisy at all. I have only heard him make a sweet little bark a couple of times.
When the door bell rings or there is a knock, he runs up to greet and is ready to make new friends. Tater was very interested in our resident dog at first, wanting to play and he was in her space. After a couple of days that stopped and he really is happy just running around and does not get in her face as much. He enjoys running around the house and is not always begging for attention. Often he settles down on a cozy bed and takes a snooze.
Tater does startle the first time he hears a new loud noise but he also settles very quickly. We learned today that he is not a big fan of the rain, thunder or lightening - but who is. Tater is very well behaved on a leash and enjoys short walks.
Tater is a very loving dog - he is always gentle when taking his treat, playing with the kids, cat and dog. He recognizes when you call his name and even comes when you call him. He follows you around but is not right under your feet. He enjoys being part of the family and we have enjoyed getting to know him.
January 10 update:
Tater tot, being a mill dog, has had very limited socialization and as such he doesn't actively seek out human affection. He has some fear "aggression" for lack of better words. He has been adopted out and returned a few times now for various reasons but mostly due to issues with housetraining and lack of bonding. Being that he is similar to a feral cat, he will need someone who is willing to be very patient in allowing him to come around on his own terms; Tater needs to learn to trust before he will accept a new person wanting to snuggle with him. This could take a year or more. As far as the housetraining goes - he may never be fully housetrained. He's used to going where he sleeps. Whoever adopts him needs to understand this and not expect him to become housetrained in a month or two no matter the method (he's a Frenchie after all).
To elaborate on the fear aggression - when his past adopter attempted to pull him out of his crate he nipped at her and nipped at another family member when they tried to wipe him after going to the bathroom. He's not used to being handled and was likely abused so forcing him to do things is not advised. A behavioral trainer will be a stipulation of his next adoption - not just for Tater but for his adopter to better understand animal behavior. With all of that, we are still working with Tater in his foster home on house training and affection. Hopefully, he will come to realize people really just want to love him!
