The True Cost of Bulldog Ownership: A Rescue Director Explains the Numbers

10/10/2025

Bulldogs are cute, clownish, needy, dramatic, spunky, stubborn, and medically interesting little creatures. They are not “cheap” dogs. And as a bulldog rescue, we see exactly where the costs add up — before, during, and after adoption. Here’s what bulldog owners should realistically expect in 2025.
🦴 1. Upfront Bulldog Costs
  • Adoption/Purchase fee: $250–thousands
  • Initial vetting: $300–$800 -
    • For the basics, our costs are approximately $500-700 per dog just for:
      1. Heartworm prevention
      2. Vaccines (DhPP, Rabies)
      3. Fecal testing
      4. Heartworm testing
      5. Microchip
      6. Basic spay/neuter
  • Supplies (crates, gates, harness, bowls): $250
  • First-month meds & testing: $100–$300
🩺 2. Yearly Medical Expenses
Even healthy bulldogs average $1,000–$2,500 per year in routine medical care.
Typical yearly costs:
  • Allergy meds: $300–$1,200
  • Ear infection treatment: $150–$600
  • Eye issues: $150–$800
  • Skin care: $200–$1,000
🫁 3. Common Bulldog Surgeries

These are the ones we see constantly in rescue:
  • BOAS / airway surgery: $2,000–$5,000
  • Entropion or cherry eye correction: $1,000–$2,500
  • ACL/CCL repair: $2,000–$4,000
  • Spinal/IVDD treatment: $3,000–$15,000
  • Tail amputations: $2,500-5,000
🛁 4. Grooming & Home Care
Bulldogs need regular:
  • Wrinkle cleaning
  • Tail pocket care
  • Medicated baths
  • Ear cleaning
Yearly cost: $200–$500
🧡 5. Emergency Fund or Insurance
We ALWAYS recommend pet insurance.
If not insurance, a minimum $2,000 emergency fund is essential.

❤️ Final Thoughts
Bulldogs are incredible companions — but they require owners who understand the financial commitment. When adopters are informed, bulldogs thrive. When they aren’t, bulldogs end up in rescue.
If you’re considering adopting, we’re here to help guide you every step.
